On the 22nd August 1964, Arsenal's 3-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool was the first and only football match featured on the first episode of Match of the Day.



On the 22nd August of the year 1999, Davor Šuker made his debut for Arsenal as a substitute in the match against Manchester United. Davor Šuker is a Croatian and holds the record of being the all-time top goalscorer for the Croatian national team, which record stands at 45 goals. He joined Arsenal after three seasons at Real Madrid, but only spent the 1999/00 season playing at Highbury. He scored 8 goals in 22 league appearances. In his debut against United, Arsenal lost by the score of 2-1.
