23rd August

Luis Boa Morte was one of Arsene Wenger's earliest signings when he took over as manager of Arsenal. Boa Morte was signed from the youth academy of Portuguese club Sporting CP. He made his debut as a substitute in a match against Southampton played on the 23rd August 1997. After signing for the transfer fee of £1.75 million, Boa Morte spent just two seasons at Arsenal and played just 25 league matches. He joined Southampton, the team against which he made his Arsenal debut, in August 1999 for £500000.

On the 23rd August of the year 2006, Theo Walcott became the youngest Arsenal player to represent the club in a European competition. The match was played at home in the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb. Walcott was just 17 years 129 days old. He was booked in that match for taking a shot after the referee whistled, and thus became also the youngest Arsenal player to be booked in a European competition.
